Dover Town Memorial

The memorial commemorates the people of Dover who were lost in the two World Wars, and includes the names of civilians who lost their lives during World War Two when Dover became known as “Hellfire Corner”.

Link to the website of the Dover War Memorial Project which shows the results of much good research.

This member of my family is not listed on the memorial as he died in 1947: R.J. DIXON

This relative of mine was killed in Ireland in 1920. W.A. DIXON - The application from his widow for his name to be included on the Dover Memorial was refused. See this page on the Dover War Memorial Project website. He was the brother of Ernest Edward DIXON (above).

This member of my family was a naturalised Frenchman who was part of the French Resistance. He was shot by the Gestapo in 1943. W.T. SHARP – See this page on the Dover War Memorial Project website. He was the brother of Edward Sidney Henry SHARP (above).

C. PODEVIN This man is buried at Charlton Cemetery but is not listed on the Dover Memorial. His family lived for many years in Dover, and it seems very likely that he was related to G.S. PODEVIN (see above). The exact family relationship is still to be established.
