Occupation 1915 Labourer. Attested for service 8 Dec 1915 at Peterborough, and was placed on the reserve list until 25 Jul 1916. Enlisted 26 Jul 1916 at Huntingdon, Private - RX4/210936 - Army Service Corps (Remounts), and underwent basic training until 25 Aug 1916. Posted to France 26 Aug 1916 where he served until 13 Jan 1918. He was returned to England 14 Jan 1918 due to illness. An Army Medical Board at Horton (County of London) War Hospital, Epsom, examined his case on 18th Mar 1918, and determined a 60% disability due to Pulmonary Tuberculosis. They further determined that this was of a permanent nature and that his condition was “directly attributable to his war service”. He was discharged as permanently unfit for further military service at Woolwich Dockyard on 8 Apr 1918, with a recommendation that he seek out-patient treatment, and was awarded a standard military disability pension. His intended place of residence after discharge was given as 3 Westbury Road, Dover (Kent). He died on 19th November 1918 (from Tuberculosis) at 98 Clarendon Place, Dover (Kent) aged 40. He was buried on Monday 25th November 1918 at Ss Peter & Paul, River near Dover (Kent). [Representations have been made to the Ministry of Defence to obtain full “war-dead” status for William, and a listing for him on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission roll of honour. I am pleased to announce that notification was received on 28th January 2008 that these representations have now been accepted by the Ministry of Defence].
