He married Eliza IDDENDEN, 13 May 1845 at St Nicholas, Thanington (Kent). [Richard Winchester was a waiter at the Pier Hotel at Herne Bay. One evening he was travelling home to Canterbury and, going through Sturry, he fell off the omnibus; he was picked up, taken to his home in Military Road, Canterbury, where he was given medical attention, but was found dead in bed next morning 27th August 1852. The coroner's inquest said he had left a wife and four children totally unprovided for. Eliza died about six months later of consumption. By 1861 the three youngest orphaned children were in the West Malling workhouse, with their place of birth falsely given as Trottiscliffe (Kent). It seems likely that whoever had taken them into care after the death of their parents had managed to persuade the West Malling poor law commissioners that they were responsible for them, presumably because their father had settlement in Trottiscliffe at some stage].
