Albert Frederick HUSK 1897 - 1920

1.  Albert Frederick HUSK, born 8 Dec 1897 in Nonington (Kent), census 1901 at Lower Street, Tilmanstone (Kent). Albert was a “boy sailor” aboard the training ship “Arethusa”, and joined the Royal Navy proper on 21 Aug 1913 as a “Boy 2nd Class”, (Service No. J26742). He served at HMS Ganges and several other shore-based training establishments until 9 Feb 1915, when he joined HMS Cochrane (A “Warrior Class” Cruiser), as a “Boy 1st Class”. He was promoted to Ordinary Seaman on 8 Aug 1915.  On 8 Dec 1915, (his eighteenth birthday), Albert signed on for a further 12 years service, obviously intending to make the Royal Navy his career. On 8 Apr 1916 he was promoted to Able Seaman, and was a member of the crew when HMS Cochrane was in action at the Battle of Jutland. HMS Cochrane survived the battle, but her sister ship “Warrior” was one of those lost. Albert continued to serve on HMS Cochrane until 5 Feb 1918, when he was returned to Pembroke Naval Barracks at Chatham. On 20 Mar 1918 he was invalided out from the service, considered unfit for further duty. The cause of this was given in his service record as “Pulmonary Tuberculosis”. Albert died 23 May 1920 at 10 Union Road, Bridge (Kent) - Aged 22. The address on the Death Certificate was that of the Bridge Union Workhouse Infirmary, and the primary cause of death was given as “Pulmonary Laryngeal Tuberculosis”. He was buried 26 May 1920 at St Andrew, Tilmanstone (Kent).

Albert is one of many not originally recognized as “War Dead”, and was not listed in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Register of those who fell. What is clear is that having served during the War, he was invalided out of the service before the cessation of hostilities. It is not known whether Albert suffered some trauma or injury whilst in service which contributed to, or aggravated, his medical condition, but he died from the same disease that had brought about his discharge. It seems that the Tilmanstone community certainly attributed his untimely death to his war service, because his name was submitted and accepted for inclusion on the village’s War Memorial. [An application was made to MOD to ensure that Albert gets full recognition as “war dead”, and we are pleased to announce that this was granted on 11th February 2008].
